Adams County has launched the East Germantown-Germantown Reliability Project to enhance electric service for 2,300 homes and businesses. Spearheaded by Mid-Atlantic Interstate Transmission, this project includes constructing a new substation and a 115-kilovolt transmission line. The initiative aims to improve service reliability, particularly for essential facilities like Hanover Hospital and WellSpan Health. Completion is expected by March 2026 as part of a larger Energize365 initiative to modernize the electric grid across various states.
In a significant development for residents and businesses in Adams County, Pennsylvania, the East Germantown-Germantown Reliability Project has officially begun. Aimed at enhancing electric service reliability for approximately 2,300 homes and businesses, this project will notably benefit essential facilities such as Hanover Hospital, Alpha Fire Company, and WellSpan Health.
The venture is spearheaded by Mid-Atlantic Interstate Transmission, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy. Key components of the project include the construction of a new substation and a 115-kilovolt transmission line connecting to the existing Germantown Substation located west of Littlestown. These upgrades are expected to provide operators with greater flexibility to manage power distribution efficiently while addressing equipment failures or surges in demand.
By enabling operators to reroute power as needed, these improvements promise to significantly diminish both the frequency and duration of power outages experienced by local consumers. The entire project is projected to reach completion by March 2026.
The impetus for this project arises from recent high temperature events and an increasing demand for electricity, which have put a noticeable strain on the existing grid. This strain has resulted in intermittent outages that affect residents and businesses alike. The enhancements from the project aim to establish a more resilient grid that can better handle peak electricity loads.
The reliability project is part of a larger investment initiative known as Energize365. With a total budget of $28 billion, Energize365 is designed to modernize the electric grid across various states from 2025 to 2029. This comprehensive program seeks to enhance the security and adaptability of the grid as consumer demand escalates in the coming years.
To ensure minimal disruption to environmentally sensitive areas and local properties, the transmission line’s route was carefully selected. Furthermore, landscaping and environmental restoration efforts related to the project are planned to continue well into 2026, underlining a commitment to community and environmental well-being during construction.
