Infrastructure improvements underway along I-90 in Erie County.
Erie County, Pennsylvania, August 28, 2025
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has announced three major roadway projects along the I-90 corridor in Erie County. These initiatives aim to improve safety and traffic management, including the demolition of the Beckman Road Bridge, the installation of ramp gates at various interchanges, and extensive roadway repairs. Collectively valued at over $19 million, these projects highlight the state’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and ensuring safer travel for all commuters in the region.
On August 25, 2025, three significant roadway projects aimed at improving safety and overall traffic service along the Interstate 90 corridor in Erie County, Pennsylvania, were officially announced by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). This initiative is part of a broader commitment to tackle infrastructure needs across the state, with 100 other projects planned in the northwest region.
The projects highlight the importance of infrastructure acknowledged by the state leadership, emphasizing the vital role that safe roads and efficient transportation systems play in the everyday lives of Pennsylvanians.
In the first seven months of 2025, over 1,800 roadway miles and 225 bridges have been enhanced through the efforts of PennDOT and its contractors. Currently, there are more than 1,400 projects in progress or set to be put out to bid within the coming year. The three recently-announced projects are as follows:
Located in Girard Township, the Beckman Road Bridge, constructed in 1959, has been rated in poor condition due to substantial damage resulting from a vehicle strike in February 2025. Demolition work is scheduled to begin on September 8, 2025, following initial preparations starting on September 2. To reduce disruptions for commuters, the majority of the demolition will occur at night, taking an estimated three weeks to complete.
The estimated cost for the bridge demolition project stands at $391,409, and it is fully financed by state funds. An entirely new bridge is projected to be constructed by 2028 as part of a broader reconstruction effort along the I-90 corridor.
To bolster traffic management, ramp gates will be installed at nine interchanges. This improvement project is anticipated to cost $580,652, with complete funding provided by state sources. The installation is expected to be finalized by April 2026, enhancing control during emergency scenarios.
Repair work is slated for a 17-mile section of I-90 and a 13-mile segment of I-79, set to commence in mid-September 2025 and expected to last about one year. The allocated budget for this vital improvement totals $18.4 million, combining both federal and state funding. The purpose of these repairs is to enhance road uniformity and safety along these critical travel routes.
The Beckman Road Bridge demolition is part of an extensive I-90 reconstruction plan valued at more than $217 million, which will span multiple years. This concerted effort is expected to greatly improve safety, enhance transportation efficiency, and provide better service for local drivers and commuters, including the essential freight movement across the region.
The main objective is to improve safety and service on the roadway, minimizing travel disruptions and enhancing traffic management in the area.
Preliminary work begins on September 2, 2025, with the actual demolition scheduled to start on September 8, 2025.
The cost of the Beckman Road Bridge demolition is $391,409, fully funded by state resources.
The initiative includes the installation of ramp gates at nine interchanges and roadway repairs along a 17-mile stretch of I-90 and a 13-mile section of I-79.
The extensive I-90 reconstruction plan is valued at over $217 million, which will be executed over several years.
